"...And Expiation" is the eighth episode of the 4th season of 7th Heaven. On its original airing, this episode scored 8.11 million viewers. This episode is the second part to a two-parter episode.

Synopsis[]

After Mary is arrested for vandalizing the school gym, she learns about the possible consequences of her actions. These include losing her scholarship to college, expulsion from school, and jail time. Eric and Annie enlist the help of their friend who's a lawyer in order to find an alternate solution for Mary instead of going to jail. Lucy, who is a part of the student government team at school has to decide whether or not Mary and her teammates deserve to be expelled from school as a result of their actions. Matt moves home but begins to wonder if it was the right decision after all. Simon and Ruthie feel overwhelming guilt for having some knowledge about Mary's intentions prior to the vandalism taking place but not telling their parents about it. In order to make up for this Simon and Ruthie visit many different houses of worship in search for redemption.

Notes[]

  • This episode is the second part of a two-parter.
  • Some consider this episode the start of Mary's downward spiral to rock bottom and it takes a drastic change on the character.

Trivia[]

  • This is the last episode written by Catherine LePard as she exits the show entirely at the end of the 4th season. She goes on to create her own show which is on the cable channel Lifetime called, "For the People."
  • This was the last week that Brenda Hampton's two shows, 7th Heaven and Safe Harbor were paired together at 8pm and 9pm. After this week, Safe Harbor moved to Sunday nights at 7pm and was eventually taken off the air by January, 2000.

Goofs & Errors[]

  • It's very unrealistic for Lucy to be allowed on the judges' panel during Mary's trial, because it would be a conflict of interest, as she is Mary's sister.
